About The Gift Perch

The Gift Perch is a gift guide for bird lovers, and it is organized by what you want to spend rather than by what kind of product something is. That is the entire idea, and it came from noticing that every other guide in this category is arranged the way a shop is arranged — feeders here, books there, optics at the bottom — when the person doing the buying already knows their budget and does not know whether the recipient needs a feeder.

We write for the gift buyer, not the birder. The spouse or the adult child who knows this person likes birds, has a number in mind and a deadline, does not know what 8x42 means, and is quietly worried about buying the wrong thing. Every page is written for that person.

Who writes this

Scooter M. — an enthusiast who is genuinely into this. The kind of person who reads the manual before the review. For The Gift Perch that means compiling published specifications, doing the cost arithmetic manufacturers leave out, and pricing everything live.

No lab coat, no test bench, and no claims about gear I have not handled. There is no editorial team behind this byline pretending to be larger than it is, and no credential I do not hold.

What we do instead of testing

The sites that rank in this category lead with hands-on testing — nine cameras tested in a Wisconsin yard, three years of side-by-side comparison, tested and reviewed. We have none of that and we are not going to manufacture it. Inventing a test is a lie a competitor could disprove in an afternoon.

So we compete on something we can actually do: published, reproducible method. Concretely, that means:

• Putting a "skip this if" on every single pick. A list where everything wins is a list nobody should believe.
