Bird Buddy wins on transparency and on its free tier: it publishes full hardware specifications and its free membership still includes Photo and Sound ID, automatic photos and videos, and the live stream, with Premium at $69.99 a year. Birdfy's free membership caps at 10 AI recognitions a day, 20-second clips and 30 days of retention, and it does not publish its Plus or Pro prices on the help pages we could read.

This is the highest-value comparison query in the whole niche, and it is usually answered on picture quality. That is the wrong axis. Both cameras are good enough to identify a chickadee at a foot. What differs is what you own afterwards.

The verdict

Buy Bird Buddy unless you specifically want the Birdfy AI Lifetime variant. The reason is not the camera; it is that Bird Buddy publishes what it sells and its free tier remains a working product. You can tell a gift recipient exactly what the device does and exactly what it will cost them, which you cannot currently do with Birdfy.

Buy Birdfy if you want identification bundled permanently for one payment and you are confident you are selecting the AI Lifetime variant rather than the Lite. That is a real advantage Bird Buddy does not offer at all.

The case for the loser

Birdfy's lifetime variant is genuinely the better long-run economics. Three years of Bird Buddy Premium at $69.99 comes to $209.97 — more than the hardware. If the recipient will definitely want automatic AI recognition, a one-time lifetime purchase beats an annual plan comfortably.
