How to attract more birds to your yard

Water first, cover second, feeders third. That order is the opposite of how most people spend, and it is why most gardens stall at four species.

Add water before you add another feeder. A shallow bath — no more than two inches deep at its deepest point, sloping from the rim — attracts species that never visit a feeder at all, including warblers and thrushes. After water, add cover within about ten feet of the feeding area, then a second feeder type. Seed choice comes last.

Most gardens plateau at three or four species. The reason is almost never the seed: it is that the garden offers exactly one thing birds need, and birds need three.

The order that works

  1. Water. The single biggest change most gardens can make, and the cheapest. It attracts insectivores that will never touch a seed feeder. In a freeze, it outperforms food outright.
  2. Cover. Shrubs or a small tree within about ten feet of the feeder. Cardinals in particular are cautious and want somewhere to retreat to; a feeder in open lawn gets far fewer visits.
  3. A second feeder type. A hopper or tray for cardinals plus a small-perch tube for finches roughly doubles the species list. Which feeder brings which bird.
  4. Suet. Brings woodpeckers and nuthatches that a seed feeder never will, for under $25.
  5. A nest box. Built to NestWatch dimensions, hung in late winter, 4 to 6 feet up.
  6. Then, and only then, better seed. Oil sunflower and safflower for cardinals; nyjer for goldfinches.

Why water outperforms food

Every bird needs water; only some eat seed. That single fact is why a bath brings in warblers, thrushes, waxwings and vireos that would never approach a feeder. Audubon's guidance — a maximum of two inches at the deepest point, sloping gradually from the rim — is the whole specification.

Add motion. A dripper or bubbler is audible from a distance and is by far the most effective way to get a new bath found. Full placement guidance here.

Winter
Concrete and ceramic basins crack when water freezes in them. A pedestal bath is a three-season purchase unless it is emptied.

Entrance hole
1.5 in diameter is the standard bluebird hole. Mountain Bluebirds take 1 9/16 in. Chickadees need about 1 1/8 in and wrens about 1 1/4 in, so a box sold as generic will exclude or admit species depending on this one number.
Why the hole size is not decoration
A hole sized correctly for the target species also excludes larger non-native competitors. Oversizing it hands the box to European Starlings.
Material
Cedar, which weathers without treatment. Never paint or stain the interior of a nest box.

Two things that quietly cost you birds

  • Cats outdoors. No amount of feeder placement compensates. If there is a cat, a baffled pole well clear of launch points is the minimum.
  • A dirty feeder or bath. Both spread disease between birds. Clean feeders regularly and change bath water every couple of days.
