Feeders and feeder cameras

This category splits cleanly in two, and the split matters more than any individual product. There are camera feeders, which are consumer electronics that happen to hold seed, and there are feeders, which are plastic and metal objects that will outlive you. They solve different problems and they fail in different ways.

Camera feeders: read the subscription before the spec sheet

Every review of this category ranks on picture quality. That is the wrong first question. A camera feeder is a device you own for years, and the figure that decides what it costs is the subscription — which ranges from "nothing, and it still identifies birds" to "identification stops entirely".

The three things a camera feeder needs from your garden

1. 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi that reaches the feeder. Every model in this category is 2.4 GHz only — there is no 5 GHz radio in any of them. A feeder at the bottom of a long garden or behind a stone wall may never connect, and that is not fixable afterwards.
2. Birds that already visit. A camera is not an attractant. In a bare garden with no water and no cover it will film an empty perch for weeks.
3. Somewhere to mount it. Most need a pole or a permanent hook, which rules out some rentals and most balconies.

Ordinary feeders still win on two things
