Best bird feeder poles and squirrel baffles

This page is the hardware half of the squirrel problem. The squirrel-proof feeder page covers the mechanism that works inside a feeder — a weight-activated shroud — and it is worth reading, because the honest conclusion there is that placement does at least as much as the feeder does. A pole is how you buy that placement. Every figure below is the maker's own, read on the dates in the sources; we have not handled this hardware.

What we judged on

1. Whether the maker publishes the clearance rule. The two makers here both print it. That matters more than any material claim, because a correctly specified baffle in the wrong place does nothing at all.
2. Baffle geometry: height or width. A cylinder defeats the climb; a disk defeats the reach. Both work on squirrels. Only the tall cylinder is rated for raccoons, which are the animals that empty a feeder overnight.
3. How the pole is anchored. A screw-in ground socket that goes 20 in down is the difference between a pole that is still vertical in February and one that leans. A push-in spike is not the same thing.
4. Pole diameter and wall. 1 in steel is the standard that baffles and flanges are built around. Anything thinner narrows what you can ever mount on it.
5. Whether the baffle can be retrofitted. Both Erva baffles slide on from the top, so the pole has to come apart. That rules out shepherd's hooks entirely, and both makers say so in writing.
6. What is missing from the spec. Neither maker publishes a load rating for a pole or a clamp rating for a baffle. That is a real gap and we have marked it on every pick.

• The maker publishes the placement rule as well as the hardware — 4 ft of baffle clearance and 8 to 10 ft from anything a squirrel can jump from

• A tube baffle defeats the climb rather than the reach, which is why it works on raccoons where a short cone does not

Raccoons are the problem rather than squirrels. Erva's own range answers raccoons with the 28 in cylinder, and a flat disk at the same height does not do the same job.

The clearance rule, which is the actual product

Two independent manufacturers publishing the same two numbers is the strongest signal on this page. Kettle Moraine states that squirrel baffles should be mounted a minimum of 4 ft from the top of the baffle to the ground, and that the pole should stand 8 to 10 ft away from railings, roofs or trees. Erva prints the same pair of figures on its baffle pages: feeders 8 to 10 ft from railings, roofs or trees, and baffles at least 4 ft from the ground.

The reasoning is mechanical rather than behavioral. A baffle stops a squirrel climbing the pole, so a squirrel that can jump onto the feeder from a fence, a branch or a roof never touches the pole at all. That is why a baffled pole under a tree fails, and why the same hardware in the middle of a lawn works. If you only take one thing from this page, take the tape measure before the credit card.

Squirrels and raccoons are different problems

A squirrel climbs, and a baffle of almost any shape at the right height stops it. A raccoon is heavier, taller on its hind legs and far stronger, and it defeats short baffles by reaching over them. That is why Erva's range splits its cylinder into a 14.5 in squirrel version and a 28 in raccoon version, and why Kettle Moraine sells its pole package with either a squirrel baffle or a longer raccoon baffle at about eighteen dollars more.

• Feeder emptied over days, seed scattered, shells everywhere. Squirrels. The short baffle is enough.
• Feeder emptied overnight, sometimes knocked off the pole entirely. Raccoons. Buy the long baffle the first time rather than the second.
• Pole scratched or the baffle bent. Something heavy has been working at it. That is raccoon weight, not squirrel weight.
• Nothing gets past but the feeder still empties. Birds. Check what is actually on the feeder before spending anything.

What not to buy

• A shepherd's hook, if squirrels are the problem. Neither baffle here fits one, and thin hooks bend under a loaded feeder. The 1 in poles on this page exist for a reason.
• A baffle without measuring first. If there is a fence, a branch or a roof within 8 to 10 ft, the baffle will not change anything. Both makers say this on their own pages.
• A spike-in pole for a heavy feeder. A 20 in screw-in ground socket is what keeps a loaded pole upright through a wet winter.
• A short baffle in raccoon country. It is the cheaper mistake to make twice. The long cylinder costs a few dollars more than the short one.
