The main rival to Bird Buddy, and the one where which variant you buy decides whether there is ever a bill. This review is mostly about that decision, because it is the one that matters.

Buy the Birdfy AI Lifetime variant, deliberately, and it is a good feeder: bird recognition included permanently, no subscription, widely stocked. Buy the Lite variant by mistake and you have a feeder whose AI stops after a seven-day trial unless you pay. Birdfy's own pages would not give us its camera or battery specification, so this review is honest about what it cannot compare — and blunt about the variant question, which it can.

Method first. We have not handled this feeder. What follows comes from Birdfy's help center and membership pages, read on the dates in the sources, plus the category arithmetic. Birdfy's product pages would not load their hardware specification for us on any attempt, and rather than repeat figures from a retailer listing — which this site does not treat as a source — the hardware cells below say so. If that is frustrating, it is also the honest picture: Bird Buddy publishes far more, and that difference is part of the review.

The two Birdfys, and why it matters

Birdfy sells the same feeder in variants that differ in one expensive way. The AI Lifetime variant includes bird recognition permanently — buy once, identify birds forever, no plan. The Lite variant ships with a seven-day AI trial, after which recognition needs a paid membership. The hardware is the same. The listings are not always clear about which one you are looking at, and the price difference between them on a given day is often small enough that a buyer picks the cheaper one without realizing what it drops.

For a gift, this is the whole decision. A recipient handed a Lite variant discovers a week later that the feature they were told about has stopped, and either pays or stops using it. A recipient handed the AI Lifetime variant never sees a bill. Check the exact listing title before you buy, and if it does not say Lifetime, assume it is not.

Where Birdfy's cell says not published, we could not load the figure from the maker. The rivals' cells are from their own product pages.

So the honest comparison is lopsided in an unusual way. On the no-subscription question — the one this site keeps returning to — Birdfy's AI Lifetime variant is a genuinely clean answer, arguably cleaner than Bird Buddy's free tier because there is no tier at all. On everything else, Birdfy makes you take the hardware on trust, because it does not publish what the rivals publish.

Who should buy it

Someone who hates subscriptions on principle and will pay once for the AI Lifetime variant. This is the cleanest one-time purchase in the category.
Someone who wants a widely stocked brand that is easy to find, easy to return, and has a large user base for troubleshooting.
A casual watcher for whom ten recognitions a day on the free tier is plenty — that is a lot of birds for most gardens.
