Feeders & Cams — guide

How to clean a bird feeder

Cornell publishes the frequency and the method in two sentences. The hard part is owning a feeder that comes apart, which is a buying decision rather than a cleaning one.

We don't test this gear. Here's what we do instead.

Wash seed and suet feeders every week or two with warm water and dish soap, rinse thoroughly, and dry before refilling — that is Cornell's published frequency, and more often in wet weather or heavy use. Nectar feeders need it every couple of days, ideally every refill. If you want to disinfect, soak the washed parts for ten minutes in one part bleach to nine parts water. The real obstacle is hardware: a feeder that does not come apart does not get cleaned, so the pick here is the Droll Yankees Onyx Clever Clean, whose base twists off by hand.

This matters more than any other maintenance question about a feeder, because a dirty feeder is not a neutral object. Wet seed grows mold, a crowded feeding station concentrates birds that would otherwise be spread over acres, and the feeder becomes a place where disease passes between them. Cleaning is the whole of the duty of care that comes with putting food out.

The nectar figure is the one most people get wrong by an order of magnitude. Sugar water ferments in summer heat in days, not weeks.

The routine, in order

  1. Empty it, and throw the old seed away. Do not tip it back in afterwards and do not top up over damp seed. If the bottom inch is clumped, that is the part that matters.
  2. Take it apart as far as it goes. Base off, perches out, ports open. Whatever stays assembled stays dirty, which is why the hardware matters.
  3. Wash in warm water with dish soap. Cornell's method, and it is the step that does most of the work. A long brush reaches the bottom of a tube; a bottle brush does the ports.
  4. Rinse thoroughly. Soap residue in a feeder is its own problem. Rinse until the water runs clear and keeps running clear.
  5. Disinfect if you want to — ten minutes, one part bleach to nine parts water. Cornell names this as optional and gives boiling water or diluted vinegar as alternatives. Rinse again afterwards.
  6. Dry completely before refilling. This is the step people skip and it undoes the other five: seed poured into a damp tube clumps immediately.

The buying decision hidden inside this

Everything above assumes the feeder comes apart. Plenty do not, and an unopenable feeder quietly stops being used: it gets harder to clean, so it gets cleaned less, so it gets worse. That is the single most useful thing to know before buying one, and almost nothing on a product listing tells you.

Four feeders already on this site publish the right thing. The Droll Yankees Onyx is called Clever Clean because its base twists off by hand, which is the whole feature. Brome states that its Squirrel Buster Plus is dishwasher safe. The Squirrel Buster Suet comes apart without tools, which matters most of all, because suet is greasy and a greasy feeder that will not open never gets cleaned. And the Birds Choice Oriolefest is the rare nectar feeder whose maker is willing to put it in the dishwasher — the feeder type that needs cleaning every two days.

Mounting
Hanging by stainless steel wire, or pole mountedSource: Droll Yankees Onyx Clever Clean published product specifications, read 2026-09-02

What it gets right

  • The removable base is the difference between a clean feeder and a moldy one
  • Metal ports rather than plastic, which is where squirrel damage usually starts
  • Three sizes, so you can match the tube to how fast the yard eats
  • Lifetime warranty against squirrel damage

What it does not

  • Small perches mean cardinals and jays largely cannot use it
  • No squirrel exclusion of its own — the warranty covers the damage rather than preventing it
  • Capacity varies by model, and listings are not always clear which one you are buying

Who it is for

A first feeder for a beginner, or a second feeder beside a bigger one to spread the crowd out.

Skip this if

Cardinals are the point. This is a small-bird feeder; a hopper or tray suits cardinals far better.

What it gets right

  • The mechanism is physical rather than electronic, so there is nothing to fail in the cold
  • Adjustable trigger weight lets you exclude large birds as well as squirrels
  • The cardinal ring means the feeder still works for the bird most people actually want
  • Lifetime warranty on a product that lives outdoors

What it does not

  • No camera, no app — this is a feeder, not a gadget
  • 23 inches tall, which is a lot of feeder for a small balcony
  • Squirrels will still empty the tray beneath it

Who it is for

Anyone who has complained about squirrels. It is the least glamorous gift on this site and one of the most gratefully received.

Skip this if

The recipient wants to watch birds on a phone. This solves a different problem, and pairing it with a camera feeder rather than substituting for one is the better gift.

Not published by the manufacturer in a form we could verify on the maker's product page

What it gets right

  • A weight-activated shroud is the only mechanism on this page that actually defeats adult squirrels
  • Crumb ports catch the pieces that normally fall to the ground and feed rodents
  • Tool-free disassembly — suet is greasy, and a feeder that will not come apart does not get cleaned
  • Lifetime Care is the strongest warranty here

What it does not

  • Several times the price of every other feeder on this page
  • Brome's own published list says it will not stop starlings or grackles, both common suet raiders
  • Needs 18 in of clearance to work as designed, which rules out many window and fence spots
  • The maker's page does not publish dimensions or weight

Who it is for

Someone who has watched squirrels strip a suet cake in an afternoon. If that is the complaint, this is the one feeder here that answers it.

Skip this if

Your problem is starlings rather than squirrels. Brome lists starlings among the animals this feeder will not stop. Buy an upside-down feeder instead.

What it gets right

  • The only pick here with a roof over the food, which is what a week of May rain ruins first
  • Four jelly trays rather than one dish, so several orioles can feed without queuing
  • The only feeder on this page its maker clears for a dishwasher, top rack
  • Ant moat built in and bee guards in the box, both normally separate purchases

What it does not

  • Birds Choice's own store lists it at $58.99, far above what this feeder usually sells for -- the number on the button is the one that matters
  • The smallest nectar reservoir here at 12 oz, so a busy yard means more trips outside
  • The four jelly trays sit on top of the cover, so the weatherguard that shields the nectar is not over them
  • 13 in across and 2.5 lb, the biggest and heaviest thing on this page -- it needs a hook with real clearance

Who it is for

Someone who already knows orioles come to the yard, wants to offer nectar, jelly and orange at once, and lives somewhere it rains in spring.

Skip this if

You only ever put out nectar. You would be paying for jelly trays, an orange skewer and a weatherguard you will not use, and the First Nature holds nearly three times the nectar.

What to use, and what to skip

  • Warm water and dish soap. Cornell's actual recommendation, and sufficient on its own.
  • A long-handled brush and a narrow bottle brush. Between them they reach a tube's base and a nectar feeder's ports, which are the two places residue survives a rinse.
  • Diluted bleach at 1:9, for ten minutes, if you disinfect. Cornell's figure. Stronger is not better and does not need to be guessed at.
  • Boiling water or diluted vinegar as the alternatives Cornell names, if you would rather not keep bleach by the sink.
  • Skip the proprietary feeder cleaners. We could not find a published formulation for any of them. Dish soap is specified by the people who run the continent's largest feeder-watching survey.
  • Skip the dishwasher unless the maker says so. Heat warps polycarbonate. Brome says yes for the Squirrel Buster Plus and Birds Choice says yes for the Oriolefest; absent that, hand wash.

The feeders that need it most

Nectar feeders, by a wide margin — every couple of days against every week or two. Suet is second, because rendered fat goes rancid and leaves a film that cold water will not shift. Hulled and no-mess seed is third and catches people out: a sunflower kernel has no shell protecting it from damp, so hulled seed spoils in days where shelled seed lasts weeks. If you have switched to no-mess seed to keep the deck clean, the cleaning interval shortens.

Mealworm dishes need the same attention for the same reason, and Kaytee says so on its own packaging: keep the feeder filled with fresh food, discard old food before refilling, and clean regularly to minimize mold and bacteria.

When to stop feeding instead

If there is a local reported outbreak of a bird disease, the advice everywhere is to take the feeders down for a period rather than clean them more often — concentrating birds is the mechanism, and cleaning does not remove it. Check your state wildlife agency rather than a forum. Taking a feeder down for a fortnight costs you nothing; the birds were feeding themselves before you arrived.

FAQ

Questions people ask about this

How often should you clean a bird feeder?

Every week or two for seed and suet feeders, per Cornell's Project FeederWatch, and more often in wet weather or heavy use. Nectar feeders are different: every couple of days, ideally every time you refill them.

What should I clean a bird feeder with?

Warm water and dish soap, rinsed thoroughly — that is Cornell's recommendation and it is enough on its own. To disinfect, soak the washed parts for ten minutes in one part bleach to nine parts water, or use boiling water or diluted vinegar as alternatives.

Can you put a bird feeder in the dishwasher?

Only if the maker says so. Brome publishes dishwasher-safe for the Squirrel Buster Plus and Birds Choice does for the Oriolefest nectar feeder. Dishwasher heat can warp polycarbonate, so with no published statement, hand wash.

Do I need a special bird feeder cleaning brush?

A long-handled brush and a narrow bottle brush between them reach a tube's base and a nectar feeder's ports, which are the two places residue survives a rinse. They are worth having, but the brush matters far less than owning a feeder that comes apart in the first place.

How often should you change hummingbird nectar?

Every couple of days, and ideally at every refill, discarding cloudy or moldy solution immediately. Sugar water ferments in days in warm weather, and fermented nectar is harmful to the birds drinking it.

Is a dirty bird feeder dangerous to birds?

Yes. A feeder concentrates birds that would otherwise be spread out, and wet or moldy food gives disease somewhere to pass between them. That concentration is the mechanism, which is also why the advice during a local disease outbreak is to take feeders down rather than to clean them more often.

Should I clean up the seed under the feeder?

Yes. Spilled seed gets wet and grows the same molds as seed left inside the feeder. Rake it up when you clean, or move the feeder occasionally so one patch of ground is not permanently fouled.
